To Have and to Hold

Lyrics

Verse 1:
The day I first met you the world came alive
You captured my heart, and my soul you revived.
Your beauty’s unequaled both outside and in
So come take my hand, let our new life begin.

Chorus:
To have and to hold until we are old.
I’m saying I do and I will love you.
Oh, to have and to hold.

Verse 2:
I’ll love you forever, in sickness and health,
In good times and bad times, in want and in wealth.
I’ll carry your burdens and dry every tear
In joy and in sorrow I’ll always be here.

Bridge:
If I let you down or I lose my ground
Oh I pray that you’ll stay my best friend.
And if you forget that we’ve ever met
Oh I’ll win you all over again.

Story

I started this song in the shower while reflecting on the goodness of marriage and the gift of my wife (of 20 years at the time). My favorite part of the song is the second half of the bridge which speaks of covenant love, love that is deeper than just feelings or infatuation but born of unconditional promise.
